We are a young couple spending a year living and volunteering Guatemala. This year is about improving our Spanish language skills, experiencing life outside our comfort zone and learning from the people we encounter, and discovering how public health initiatives truly work on the ground.
Jimmy is a third year medical student and Kelsey is a second year law student. We are both taking a yearlong break from our academic studies for this year of service and research.
“Ver los cielos abiertos” is a Spanish expression about being given an opportunity that will allow you to achieve what you want to achieve. It connotes an “aha” type of moment where the next step you need to take becomes clear to you. Translated literally, it means “to see the open skies.”
